Luna Convento, Amalfi

Luna Convento, Amalfi

Founded in 1222 by Saint Francis of Assisi as a Franciscan convent, the property still centers around its historic cloister, distinguished by Moorish-style arches and a tranquil inner courtyard. In the early 19th century, this sacred space became the very first hotel on the Amalfi Coast, opening its doors to travelers in 1821 and welcoming five generations of the Barbaro family as its managers.

Stepping into Luna Convento feels like stepping into a living novel. The historic cells of the cloister have been meticulously transformed into individually decorated guest rooms and suites, each offering Mediterranean flair and sea‑facing views that capture the breathtaking coastal light. Among the most memorable accommodations is the Tower Suite, nestled within the ancient guard tower that once protected the bay from pirate raids. This very suite has hosted luminaries like Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Roberto Rossellini.

Guests can enjoy two distinct restaurants: one housed beneath a frescoed domed ceiling inside the convent, the other offering alfresco dining in a coastal tower with sweeping sea views. Just steps away, a seawater swimming pool-accessed via a scenic descent toward the sea-provides a perfect blend of relaxation with sun‑drenched terraces leading directly down to the waters below.

Inside, historical exhibits display the evolution of tourism here, from the early Grand Tourist to today's global guests, including artistic panels and guestbooks tracing the journeys of many distinguished visitors.
