Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling
The Macrobert Arts Centre, located on the main campus of the University of Stirling, is a vibrant multi-arts venue offering a diverse range of artistic experiences. Opened in 1971 as Scotland’s first purpose-built arts center, it was established under the vision of the university’s first principal, Tom Cottrell FRSE, who believed in placing the arts at the core of the university's cultural life. The center provides a rich program of events, including cinema, theatre, dance, music, exhibitions, and family-friendly activities, attracting audiences from Stirling, the Forth Valley, and beyond.
Following a significant refurbishment in 2002, undertaken by Appleton Architects and Buro Happold, the Macrobert Arts Centre continues to evolve as a dynamic force within the Scottish arts sector. It operates as a registered charity and is supported by funding from Creative Scotland and the University of Stirling, while also raising a substantial portion of its income through ticket sales, donations, and sponsorships.
Under the artistic leadership of Ed Robson, the center remains committed to delivering high-quality performances and creative opportunities, fostering artistic talent, and engaging with the wider community through educational and outreach projects. Its standing as one of Creative Scotland’s Regularly Funded Organisations is a testament to its dedication to artistic excellence, inclusion, and audience development.
