Merieult House, New Orleans

Merieult House, New Orleans

The Merieult House began life in 1792 as the stylish home of Jean François Merieult, a merchant actively involved in transatlantic trade during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In other words, this was not exactly a modest starter home with a nice balcony but a Spanish colonial mansion built for someone who understood shipping, trade, and the useful art of having impressive real estate in the French Quarter.

A few decades later, in the 1830s, the house received a Greek Revival makeover. Over time, the property became the flagship location of The Historic New Orleans Collection, a museum and research center devoted to the history of New Orleans and the Gulf South. In essence, this building is not just a pretty face with shutters and brickwork; it houses archives, exhibitions, and enough local memory to make a casual visit quietly stretch into the rest of the afternoon.

Inside, visitors have traditionally found the Louisiana History Galleries, covering the story of the region from precolonial times through the 20th century. The first floor included the Williams Gallery, used for changing exhibitions on Louisiana culture and history, while the second floor offered a deeper dive into the state’s layered past—a kind of crash course in Louisiana history, only with finer surroundings and no pop quizzes waiting at the end...

In 2023, The Historic New Orleans Collection began renovating the Merieult House, so many displays were temporarily moved to the French Quarter Galleries at 520 Royal Street. Before visiting, it is best to check their current exhibition details and opening hours—because in New Orleans, history may be old, but museum schedules are very much alive.

The Merieult House is also part of a larger Historic New Orleans Collection complex, which includes the Williams Residence, the Counting House, and the Brulatour Courtyard. Together, these buildings offer a broader look at the city’s architecture, domestic life, commerce, and cultural identity. Conveniently, they sit right in the French Quarter, where even a short walk can feel like a conversation between centuries...

Voodoo is an ancient ritualistic practice brought by enslaved West Africans onto the American soil upon their arrival in the 18th century.
