Mesquita Square, Mdina

Tucked away among Mdina’s narrow streets, Mesquita Square is one of the most picturesque and atmospheric corners of the Silent City. Surrounded by honey-coloured limestone façades, arched doorways and traditional Maltese architecture, this small square offers a peaceful alternative to the grander Saint Paul’s Square nearby.

The area has surprisingly ancient roots. Archaeological excavations at Mesquita Square uncovered Phoenician remains dating from around the 8th-6th centuries BC, including domestic floors and hearths, as well as an impressive Punic stone structure. Byzantine and Islamic remains have also been discovered here, including a large quantity of medieval Islamic pottery, reflecting the many cultures that shaped Mdina over the centuries.

At the centre of the square stands an old stone well, one of its most recognisable features. Take a moment to admire the surrounding historic buildings and the intimate, enclosed character of the square, which makes it an excellent spot for photography.

Fans of Game of Thrones may find the setting particularly familiar. Mesquita Square appeared in the first season of the television series as part of King’s Landing, with its timeless stone architecture providing a convincing medieval backdrop.

Despite this modern claim to fame, Mesquita Square retains the peaceful atmosphere for which Mdina is celebrated, making it a charming place to pause while exploring the city.
