Mihai Eminescu Central University Library of Iasi, Iasi
The Mihai Eminescu Central University Library of Iași is a key cultural and educational institution located at the base of Copou Hill. This notable building dominates the Mihai Eminescu Square and is commonly referred to as "At the Foundation," reflecting its original purpose as the residence for the King Ferdinand I the Unifier Foundation and its library.
Established in 1835 as the Library of the Mihaileana Academy, it transitioned into a University Library in 1860. Over time, it also served as a Central and Public Library before reverting back to a University Library in 1916. After World War II, the library settled in its current location, merging with the foundation's library in 1950 to become the Mihai Eminescu Central University Library of Iași.
A statue of the poet Mihai Eminescu now stands in front of the library, replacing a World War I monument destroyed during World War II. Inside, visitors are greeted by decorations of Carrara marble and Venetian mosaics, depicting various Romanian symbols. A statue of King Ferdinand I is prominently placed at the end of a grand staircase, a reminder of his role in defending and unifying Romania between 1916-1918.
The library houses significant rooms like the Assembly Hall, known for its acoustics, the “B. P. Hașdeu” Hall, and the Cupola, which offers panoramic views. It also features extensive reading rooms and storage for a collection of 2 million volumes, including rare manuscripts and books.
Mihai Eminescu Central University Library of Iasi is an active center for information and education, hosting events, concerts, poetry evenings, and exhibitions. It also offers guided tours of the building. The ground floor hosts cultural institutions, including the Reading Room of the German Cultural Centre, British Council, the Royal Art Galleries, and Sage Café.
