Monastery Panagia of Tenedos, Corfu
The Monastery of Tenedos is a historic and religious landmark located in the charming neighborhood of Tenedos in Corfu. The monastery was built in the late 15th century by Catholic monks from the island of Tenedos, who fled to Corfu when their homeland was occupied by the Turks. The monks brought with them the icon of Our Lady of Carmine, which they dedicated the new monastery to.
Over the years, the monastery had a close connection with the history of Corfu. When the French Democrats confiscated the monastery in 1799, the icon was transferred to the church of Taxiarchis in Campiello. The monastery was later renovated in 1723 and became a significant printing house called the "Typography of the Genus," where the first Public Library of Greece was housed. Today, the monastery's Latin Church is well-known for its impressive architecture, including a steeple-like bell tower and dome.
The Monastery of Tenedos celebrates the day of the Blessed Virgin of Carmine on July 16th. Still, it also celebrates the remembrance days of Saints Andreos and Nicholas, whose iconostasis were added to the monastery at the end of the 19th century, on November 30th and December 6th, respectively.
The monastery is located in one of the most picturesque districts of Corfu, characterized by uphill cobblestoned steps, irregular cobbled streets, and tall amphitheatrically built houses. It is situated near the New Fortress of Corfu and dominates the surrounding area, making it a popular attraction for visitors to the island.
