Corfu Gallery, Corfu
Corfu Art Gallery is a must-visit museum for those who are interested in the visual arts of Corfu island. It was established in 2005 as the first private initiative for studying the history of Corfiot art, from the 19th century until today. The collection hosted in the museum is the personal collection of Michail Aggelos Vradis, a civil engineer from Corfu.
The museum features a unique and diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, icons, engravings, and sculptures. The artists behind these artworks are either from Corfu or have lived on the island for a certain period. This aspect of the museum makes it stand out, as it is entirely dedicated to the study of Corfiot art.
The five-floor building of Corfu Art Gallery boasts several rooms that offer a rich cultural experience. The Etching Room is one of them, and it features the works of the homonymous Corfiot artist Spiros Alamanos (1947-2011), including his personal items and tools. The Pinelopi Volterra Room showcases sculptures and paintings of the female artist Pinelopi Volterra. The museum also has a Temporary Exhibitions’ Room that hosts various cultural events, a Library with artistic content, and a Gift Shop with art supplies, books, small sculptures, and replicas.
Corfu Art Gallery has been designed to meet modern museum standards. The building features all necessary safety measures, air conditioning, lighting, storing, and conservation facilities. The museum has been focused on encouraging the study of unknown aspects of Corfiot art, collaborating with the Ionian University on a permanent basis. Educational projects for children and collaboration with other cultural vehicles have also been undertaken in recent years.
