Monument à Catherine Ségurane, Nice

The Monument to Catherine Segurane in Nice is a bas-relief sculpture dedicated to the legendary folk heroine Catherine Ségurane. The sculpture, erected in 1923, is located near the spot where Catherine Ségurane is said to have played a significant role in defending the city during the Siege of Nice in 1543.

Catherine Ségurane, who was a common washerwoman, is said to have led the townspeople into battle against Turkish invaders allied with Francis I. According to legend, she knocked out a standard-bearer and took his flag. However, the existence of Catherine Ségurane has never been proven, and her heroic act is likely pure fiction or highly exaggerated.

Despite the historical uncertainties surrounding Catherine Ségurane, her legend has excited the local imagination. The monument dedicated to her is a testament to the enduring fascination that the story of her supposed feat has held for the people of Nice. The bas-relief sculpture depicts Catherine Ségurane holding a banner, surrounded by a group of people, presumably the townspeople she led into battle.

Catherine Ségurane Day is celebrated annually in Nice on 25 November, coinciding with St. Catherine's Day. The celebration is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Catherine Ségurane legend and the significance of her supposed act of heroism in the history and culture of the city of Nice.
