Monumento a la Revolucion (Monument to the Revolution), San Salvador

The Monumento a la Revolución, affectionately known by locals as "El Chuló", meaning “The Naked One”, commemorates the revolutionary movement of December 14, 1948, which led to the ousting of General Salvador Castaneda Castro and ultimately the adoption of the 1950 Constitution. Erected in 1955 under President Colonel Óscar Osorio, the monument stands at the entrance to the Museum of Art of El Salvador, forming part of a cohesive artistic and architectural ensemble.

Designed by Mexican artist Claudio Cevallos alongside Salvadoran artist Violeta Bonilla-a disciple of Diego Rivera, one of Mexico’s most famous painters and muralists-the monument centers on a mosaic mural of a nude man with raised arms, evoking liberation and the emergence of a new Salvadoran people. The figure is constructed from stones collected from various regions across El Salvador, reinforcing the monument’s unity in diversity.

The site also includes a sculptural piece called “Allegory of the 1950 Constitution”, created by Costa Rican–Mexican artist Francisco Zúñiga. It depicts figures such as a worker, a soldier, mothers with children, and an individual holding the constitution, all gathered around a central woman draped in the Salvadoran flag.
