Moses Myers House, Norfolk

Moses Myers House, Norfolk

The Moses Myers House was built for merchant Moses Myers, who became Norfolk’s first permanent Jewish resident and an important figure in the city’s early commercial life. The residence is one of the earliest brick homes constructed in Norfolk after the Revolutionary War and a rare surviving example of Federal architecture in the region. Five generations of the Myers family lived in the Moses Myers House from 1795 to 1931, preserving much of its interior character across more than a century.

The townhouse reflects the balanced style of Federal architecture, with a symmetrical brick front, a pedimented gable roof, and a detailed aedicule doorway. Inside, decorative features such as Adam-style plasterwork, elegant mantels, and cornices showcase the refinement of the period. Impressively, about 70% of the home’s original furnishings have been preserved, offering an authentic glimpse into household life two centuries ago.

In the early 20th century, Norfolk mayor Barton Myers undertook restoration work on the family home, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The property later came under the care of the Chrysler Museum of Art, which continues to manage it today. Now open as a historic house museum, the Moses Myers House retains an impressive collection of original furnishings, including portraits by Gilbert Stuart, period furniture, musical instruments, decorative details, and carefully preserved interiors.
