Taylor–Whittle House, Norfolk

Taylor–Whittle House, Norfolk

Constructed around 1791, this two‑story brick townhouse stands as one of the finest surviving examples of Federal‑style townhouses in Tidewater Virginia-particularly exceptional in Norfolk, where few such residences remain. It features a pedimented gable roof and a charming porch supported by Doric columns. The meticulously laid Flemish bond brickwork, delicate cornices, and small-paned sash windows attest to the craftsmanship of its era.

It was built for either George Purdie, a merchant from Nansemond County, or Mayor John Cowper, and later acquired in 1802 by Richard Taylor, an English importer. Over time, the house passed to Taylor’s daughter, Sarah Alexandrine Taylor, and her husband, Captain Richard Lucien Page, a distinguished naval officer involved with Commodore Perry’s Japan expedition and organizer of Virginia’s Confederate navy.

The Taylor–Whittle House contributes to one of Norfolk’s most architecturally rich neighborhoods. The West Freemason Street Area Historic District encompasses a collection of homes built between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, showcasing Federal, Greek Revival, and Late Victorian styles. The house itself has served various civic roles-formerly housing the Norfolk Historical Society and the Junior League of Norfolk‑Virginia Beach-before 2011.
