Musée Départemental de la Résistance et de la Déportation, Toulouse

The Departmental Museum of Resistance and Deportation (Musée Départemental de la Résistance et de la Déportation), located in Toulouse, serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and events from the end of the First World War through to the Liberation of France. This museum, which opened its doors in 1994 to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Toulouse and the Haute-Garonne department, continues the legacy of an earlier institution established in 1974 that collected documents from individuals documenting this historic period.

The museum's core mission is to educate visitors about the period of the Vichy dictatorship and the Occupation, shedding light on the lives affected during these times. It features a permanent collection on the second floor which chronicles the rise of fascism, the ensuing years of struggle, and the eventual Liberation and reconstruction of France. A special section within this permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Deportation, offering insights into the somber experiences of deportees.

Additionally, the first floor of the museum hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into various aspects of this era, enriching visitors' understanding with new perspectives and scholarly research. The museum also houses a documentary center, which includes a large archive fund, and an auditorium for educational programs and discussions.

An intriguing artifact within the museum is the bust of the Black Marianne, donated in 1977 by the Toulouse Freemasonry Museum. This bust, crafted in 1848 by the Masonic sculptor Bernard Griffoul-Dorval, symbolizes the second abolition of slavery with its Masonic symbols. Despite being damaged by members of the Vichy regime during World War II, it was preserved by Freemason resistance fighters who buried it until its rediscovery and donation.

Adjacent to the museum is the monument to the glory of the Resistance, located on the Alain-Savary esplanade (Frédéric-Mistral Alley). This monument stands as a tribute to the bravery and resilience of those who resisted during one of France’s darkest chapters. Together, these elements make the Departmental Museum of Resistance and Deportation a vital institution for remembering the past and educating future generations.
