Musée Zoologique, Strasbourg

The Zoological Museum in Strasbourg showcases collections of animals that belong to the city. It used to be managed by university staff for a long time, but now it's part of the city's museum network. You can find it on Boulevard de la Victoire, near the old campus of the University of Strasbourg.

The museum originated in 1804 when Strasbourg acquired Jean Hermann's natural history collections. In 1818, these items were entrusted to the Strasbourg Academy to establish a natural history museum. The University of Strasbourg began overseeing most collections in 1872, except for Zoology, still owned by the city. The zoological museum debuted in 1893 at the Institute of Zoology. In 2010, a French northeast bone collection was incorporated.

The museum closed to visitors on September 22, 2019 after a special event. They planned to work on it for three years to make it better, and it's set to reopen in 2024. Since October 2020, the collections have been kept at the Center for Study and Conservation of the Museums of the City of Strasbourg.

Inside the museum, you can see a wide range of collections like birds, mammals, sea animals without backbones, and insects. They pay special attention to animals from Alsace. Before the museum closed, they had a display from 1988 that showed what Jean Hermann's natural history collection looked like, with lots of old stuff and samples from that time.
