Museo Cerralbo (Cerralbo Museum), Madrid

Museo Cerralbo (Cerralbo Museum), Madrid

This magnificent mansion, built in the 19th century, stands as a testament to Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, the 17th Marquis of Cerralbo. Following his passing, the house was bequeathed to the state and opened its doors as a museum in 1962. As you explore the interior, you will discover a unique display that reflects the marquis's personal arrangements, as specified in his will.

The exhibits are diverse, ranging from Iberian pottery to exquisite 18th-century marble busts. Among the notable highlights is El Greco's renowned painting, "The Ecstasy of Saint Francis of Assisi", alongside impressive works by Ribera, Zurbarán, Alonso Cano, and Goya. However, the true highlight of the main floor lies in the opulent mirrored ballroom, adorned with a stunning fresco inspired by Tiepolo, intricate golden stuccowork, and exquisite marble accents.

Outside, the small gardens offer a serene and picturesque setting. As you explore further, don't miss the charming small gardens outside, which offer a delightful and tranquil retreat.

Why You Should Visit:
A rare gem that perfectly preserves the original 19th-century mansion's décor, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the lavish lifestyle of its former owner. Each room is adorned with paintings, luxurious carpets, delicate porcelain, historic weaponry (including a samurai suit of armor), coins and medals, intricate jewelry, and a rich collection of books. The experience is enhanced by a complimentary English audioguide, providing valuable insights into the exhibits.

Tips:
To fully enjoy your visit, it's recommended to arrive early, as the house has limited capacity and tends to become crowded after 11am. Seniors can enter for free, but they will need to present their passport. For other visitors, the entry fee is €3, except on Sundays when admission is free (although expect long queues). If you're short on time, prioritize the final rooms, as they showcase the most spectacular displays of art and craftsmanship.
If you are short of time, make time for the final few rooms as they are the most spectacular.
The small outside gardens are also beautiful and pleasant to behold.
