Museo de las Ciencias Naturales La Salle (La Salle Science Museum), Bogota

La Salle Science Museum of Bogota, located at the La Candelaria headquarters of La Salle University, is a treasure trove of Colombian biodiversity and a historic institution for scientific research and education. Founded in 1910, it resides in a building constructed in 1940, which was declared a cultural asset of district importance in 1994. The museum serves as a testament to the legacy of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who established their educational mission in Bogota in 1893.

The museum offers visitors an immersive experience into Colombia's rich biological diversity through a series of wildlife dioramas and meticulously classified exhibits of stuffed animals, representing species from Colombia and around the world. Its third floor showcases an extensive collection organized by region and habitat, emphasizing the museum's role as a "window into Colombian biodiversity."

The La Salle Science Museum began on the second floor of the San Victor School, part of the La Salle Institute. Though the 1948 Bogotazo destroyed the institute’s original building, the museum was preserved and relocated to its current site. Founder Brother Apolinar Maria envisioned it as a hub for research, founding the Colombian Society of Natural Sciences in 1912. Brothers Niceforo Maria and Daniel later expanded the collections, with Brother Daniel organizing the current exhibition, inaugurated in 1984.

In recent years, La Salle University has managed the museum with support from its Biology Program, under the direction of Professor Fernando Sarmiento Parra. The museum blends historical heritage with scientific research and houses valuable archives, including the 1913 Bulletin of the Colombian Society of Natural Sciences. It remains a beacon of biodiversity education and a testament to the Christian Brothers' dedication to science in Colombia.
