Museo Nacional de Antropologia (National Museum of Anthropology), Madrid
Spanning three floors and featuring a grand open hall, this museum, officially opened by Alfonso XII in 1875, focuses on the study of anthropology and ethnology, exploring the cultural diversity and traditions of different geographical groups of people.
The ground floor showcases a significant collection from the Philippines, including a remarkable 10-meter-long dug-out canoe carved from a single tree trunk. Additionally, there are intriguing yet somewhat macabre exhibits such as deformed skulls from Peru and the Philippines, the mummified remains of a Guanche from Tenerife (an original inhabitant of the Canary Islands), and the skeleton of Don Agustín Luengo y Capilla, an extraordinary late 19th-century giant from Extremadura. Standing at a towering height of 2.35 meters (7 ft 4 in), he passed away at the age of 26.
The first floor of the museum is dedicated to the African continent. Here, visitors can explore various artifacts including clothing, ceramics, and a replica of a Bubi ritual hut from Equatorial Guinea, where tribal members would gather to meet the "boeloelo" or witch doctor. On the second floor, exhibits focus on the lifestyles and cultures of Indigenous groups in the Americas.
Tip:
On Saturday afternoons and on Sundays, the admission is free of charge.
