The Jorge A. Ibarra Natural History Museum offers an enriching glimpse into Guatemala's incredible biodiversity and geological heritage. Founded in 1950 by esteemed naturalist Professor Jorge A. Ibarra-who directed the museum until 1996-it was renamed in his honor in 1988 to commemorate his lifelong dedication to preserving the nation's flora and fauna.

Inside, the museum features ten thoughtfully curated rooms spanning topics such as the origin of the universe and life, plate tectonics, volcanic activity, rocks and minerals, and Guatemala’s diverse ecosystems-ranging from reptiles and amphibians to birds and mammals. Exhibit highlights include taxidermied quetzals, manatees, native snakes, and an entire botanical garden.

Beyond displays, the museum actively promotes environmental education. It hosts school groups, workshops, and lectures aimed at fostering ecological awareness and inspiring conservation-minded attitudes.
