Museo Unicaja Joaquin Peinado (Joaquin Peinado Unicaja Museum), Ronda
The Unicaja Joaquín Peinado Museum, located in the historic center, is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the renowned Andalusian painter Joaquín Peinado. Housed in the 16th-century Moctezuma Palace, a building rich with Baroque, Hispano-Muslim, and Renaissance influences, the museum offers a noble and atmospheric setting.
The palace’s two courtyards, supported by Tuscan columns, add to the charm and history of the venue, which was revitalized with significant investment to preserve its character and showcase Peinado’s artistic legacy.
Inside, visitors can explore nine rooms filled with more than 190 works by Peinado, ranging from his early 1920s pieces influenced by the School of Paris to his later years, including his final work, "The Violinist." The collection features oil paintings, watercolors and rare drawings from Peinado’s private portfolios, with notable works like "Still Life with Pears" and "Figure with a Dove." The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, a library, and a shop, enhancing the cultural experience.
In addition to Peinado’s art, the museum presents a special exhibition titled “Picasso, Ceramist and Engraver,” which showcases 49 original works by Pablo Picasso, including selections from the famous "Vollard Suite." Set within the beautiful rooms of the Moctezuma Palace-once home to the heirs of the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II-this exhibition allows visitors to appreciate the rich artistic heritage of both Peinado and Picasso in an elegant, historically significant environment.
