Museum of Burgher Culture, Gdansk

The Museum of Burgher Culture in Gdansk offers a unique glimpse into the life and times of the city's affluent burgher class during the 18th and 19th centuries. Housed in a historical 18th-century building, the museum was formerly the residence of the wealthy Uphagen family. Since its inception as a museum in 1911, initially known as the Museum of Burgher Interiors, it has preserved the essence of the period's domestic life.

Remarkably, the Uphagen House has maintained much of its original character, including richly decorated wood paneling, ornate door frames, and beautifully crafted wall niche ornaments. It also features original stoves, furnishings, and personal effects belonging to the Uphagen family, providing an authentic representation of their lifestyle.

The museum underwent a significant restoration between 1993 and 1996. During this period, it was refurnished and adorned with period-appropriate items, such as mirrors, clocks, paintings, carpets, and other 18th and 19th-century artifacts. This careful curation allows visitors to experience the ambiance of a typical Gdansk patrician house of that era.

The layout of the museum replicates the typical divisions of a patrician house, featuring various rooms each with its unique function and decor. These include a hall, sales office, drawing room, dining room, smoking room, music room, kitchen, and bakery. Additionally, the museum features a meticulously restored court, showcasing a typical aspect of Gdansk burgher houses.
