Namazgokh Mosque, Bukhara

The Namazgoh Mosque, situated in the southwest of Bukhara, is a historical site with rich religious significance. It originated as a designated prayer area, mainly used for significant religious services during holidays like Kurban-bairam and Ramazan-bairam. The mosque's inception dates back to the 9th century, likely under the auspices of the Samanid dynasty. This period was marked not only by worship but also by rites of sacrifice, with communal meals served to believers irrespective of their social standing. Additionally, this era saw the establishment of the first religious educational institution in the region, which provided shelter for wandering Sufi mystics. Situated on the city's outskirts, the Namazgoh served as a vital community hub.

In 1119, under the rule of Arslan Khan, the foundational structure of the Namazgoh Mosque was constructed. This structure featured a significant brick wall, approximately 38 meters long, incorporating a mihrab-a niche indicating the direction of Mecca, essential for Islamic prayer. This mihrab is particularly notable for its intricate decorations, which include mosaics and alabaster with geometric patterns and Arabic inscriptions, showcasing the artistic and religious craftsmanship of the time.

Over the centuries, as urban dynamics evolved, the role of the Namazgoh Mosque shifted. Today, its original function has been largely supplanted by other religious complexes within the city. Situated at the periphery of Bukhara, the mosque no longer serves as a primary religious site but remains a historical and cultural landmark, reflecting the rich Islamic heritage of the region.
