National Museum of Marine Science & Technology, Keelung

The National Museum of Marine Science & Technology (NMMST) in Keelung is a major cultural and educational attraction dedicated to Taiwan’s rich maritime heritage and the broader world of oceanic science. Opened in 2014 on the site of the former North Thermal Power Plant in Badouzi, the museum blends industrial history with modern design and interactive learning. Its striking architecture-repurposing the old plant's steel frame and turbine hall-makes it one of the most unique museum spaces in northern Taiwan. Its location near the coast also connects visitors directly to the marine landscapes it explores.

Spanning multiple exhibition halls, the museum covers topics ranging from marine biology and deep-sea ecosystems to naval engineering and Taiwan’s fishing culture. Permanent exhibits such as the “Deep Sea Theater,” “Marine Environment Gallery,” and “Fishery Culture Gallery” use immersive displays, hands-on models, and multimedia installations to engage visitors of all ages. Many of the exhibits are bilingual, making the museum accessible to both local and international tourists. Temporary exhibitions often highlight current marine research, ocean conservation efforts, or art inspired by the sea.

The museum also includes outdoor educational spaces such as a tidal zone exploration area and a marine life touch pool, allowing visitors to experience the marine environment up close. In addition, the nearby Badouzi Fishing Port and Wanghaixiang Trail offer scenic spots to explore after a museum visit.
