Naval Cemetery, Pula
The Naval Cemetery in Pula, established in 1862, serves as a significant historical and cultural site. Originally acquired by the Ministry of the Navy to serve as a burial ground for the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the cemetery now occupies over 22,000 square meters. With approximately 150,000 graves, it holds the remains of numerous soldiers, including 12 Austro-Hungarian admirals, one Turkish admiral, about three hundred Italian and German soldiers, and victims from notable naval disasters like the Baron Gautsch.
Renovated in 1990 with assistance from the Austrian Red Cross and the German national association for the care of war graves, the site has been transformed into a beautiful and serene park. This space not only serves as a final resting place but also as a walk through the history of Pula, reflecting its rich cultural heritage.
Protected under the Hague Convention, the Naval Cemetery is not just a place of remembrance but also a popular location for both locals and visitors to enjoy peaceful strolls, especially along the nearby Valkane Cove. The site stands out for its significance in the context of Pula's abundant cultural monuments and is an essential part of any cultural tour of the city.
