Church of Our Lady of the Sea, Pula

Church of Our Lady of the Sea, Pula

The Church of Our Lady of the Sea, also known as the Naval Church, is a remarkable landmark in Pula. Constructed in the nineteenth century, this church stands as a splendid example of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Romantic architectural styles. The edifice is crafted from pristine white Istrian stones, with its exterior and interior both lavishly decorated, making it a prominent attraction in Pula.

Adjacent to the church is a notable 28-meter-high bell tower, which adds to the church's grandeur. The Church of Our Lady of the Sea is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, offering visitors not only spiritual solace but also a feast for the eyes with its intricate designs and historical ambiance.

The church's history is intertwined with the rich heritage of Pula. It is believed to be built on the remnants of ancient Roman ruins, embedding it deeply in the historical fabric of the region. The church was significantly influenced by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who took a personal interest in its planning and was present at the foundation stone laying ceremony in 1891.

The consecration of the church took place in 1898, and the entire plan included the surrounding area, featuring steps that lead down towards the sea. The church’s exterior is particularly distinguished by rows of white stone from Brijuni and red marble from Oprtalj-Portole and Brtonigla-Verteneglio. The interior boasts beautiful mosaics reminiscent of those found in the Basilica of Euphrasius in Poreč and Saint Mark's in Venice. Additionally, the portal of the church is adorned with unique columns tied in a Samson knot, adding to the architectural charm.

For those who appreciate a blend of art, history, and spirituality, the Church of Our Lady of the Sea in Pula is a true treasure. Its rich architectural details, historical significance, and the serene ambiance of its surroundings make it an essential destination for any traveler visiting the region.
