Nelson W. Aldrich House, Providence

Nelson W. Aldrich House is a Federal-style residence completed in 1822 for merchant Robert S. Burroughs, who commissioned architect John Holden Greene. Its balanced clapboard façade reflects early 19th-century design, while a low hipped roof, rooftop cupola, paired chimneys, and an entrance portico with Doric columns create a formal appearance. A Palladian window above the doorway forms a clear classical focal point.

The house is named after Nelson W. Aldrich, a U.S. senator from 1881 to 1911 who influenced national tariff and banking policy. In 1905, architects Stone, Carpenter & Willson remodeled the residence, adding a third floor and porches while preserving much of its earlier character. His daughter Abby later married John D. Rockefeller Jr., and their son Nelson Rockefeller was named after his grandfather.

The heirs of Winthrop W. Aldrich gave the house to the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1974. Now a National Historic Landmark, it serves as the society’s headquarters and hosts programs, exhibitions, receptions, and educational events. Visitors can see the landscaped grounds and expanded rear sections. Interior access is usually by appointment or during special events.
