Noel Kempff Mercado Municipal Zoo, Santa Cruz de la Sierra

The Noel Kempff Mercado Municipal Zoo of South American Fauna was founded by Professor Noel Kempff Mercado, a distinguished naturalist also known for creating the Hortus Amazonicus Tropicalis Boliviensis Botanical Garden. Conceived as a space dedicated exclusively to the region’s native wildlife, the zoo opened in 1979 with a modest collection and has steadily expanded in both size and scope.

Today, the zoo is home to more than 230 species and over 2,500 individual animals. Its diverse residents include approximately 40 species of mammals, 30 of reptiles, and over 120 species of birds. From jaguars and capybaras to parrots, flamingos, monkeys, reptiles, and native fish, the zoo offers a unique opportunity to observe South America’s biodiversity in one accessible location.

Drawing more than 850,000 visitors annually, the Noel Kempff Mercado Zoo has become one of Santa Cruz de la Sierra’s most popular attractions. Tourists and locals alike are drawn to its educational and recreational offerings, which spotlight the richness of the continent’s fauna while raising awareness of conservation challenges.

Whether you're visiting with children, wildlife enthusiasts, or simply curious explorers, the zoo provides a well-rounded and engaging introduction to Bolivia’s natural heritage.
