Nostra Signora della Misericordia (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy), Savona

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy, located in the village of Santuario, about six kilometers from Savona, commemorates the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Antonio Botta on March 18, 1536. At a time of conflict between Savona and Genoa, the Madonna urged "Mercy and not Justice", advocating peace. This event is honored annually with a March 18 procession led by the bishop. Over time, the sanctuary expanded to include a hospice and orphanage, adding social significance to its religious role.

The sanctuary blends Renaissance and Baroque styles. Designed by Pace Antonio Sormano, the original church was built between 1536 and 1540, while the Baroque façade, by Taddeo Carlone, was added in 1609-1611. Featuring fine marbles, the façade reflects late-Mannerist design.

Inside, the vault and nave showcase decoration by Narducci, Riva, Giuseppe Ghislandi, and Castori. The main altar, attributed to Francesco Maria Schiaffino’s studio, and cupola frescoes by Bernardo Castello enhance the grandeur. The choir’s wood inlay panels, crafted by Vincenzo and Giuseppe Garassino, highlight 18th-century craftsmanship.

The side chapels hold significant artworks. The left aisle features Bernardo Castello’s Madonna della Neve and Nativity, a marble relief of the Annunciation by Andrea Semino, and another by Gianlorenzo Bernini. The right aisle contains the Immaculate Conception by Paolo Gerolamo Brusco, a Nativity by Orazio Borgianni, and Presentation of Mary at the Temple by Domenichino.
