Notre-Dame de Québec (Our Lady of Quebec Cathedral), Quebec City (must see)
Holding a prominent position beside the Seminary of Quebec, the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec is the spiritual center of French Catholic life in North America and the oldest parish church in Canada. It stands on the site of Samuel de Champlain’s 1633 chapel of Our Lady of Recovery and became Canada’s first minor basilica in 1874.
Step inside through the main entrance and walk slowly down the central aisle toward the sanctuary. Straight ahead, above the main altar, you will see the cathedral’s most striking feature: the gold-plated baldaquin canopy suspended over the altar. Nearby, look for the old bishop’s throne and the chancel lamp donated by King Louis XIV, both recalling the church’s close links with New France.
As you move around the nave, look toward the side walls and chapels for stained-glass windows, devotional paintings, and older images of the Virgin Mary dating from the French colonial period.
The cathedral has endured major destruction twice: during the Siege of Quebec in 1759 and again in 1922, when it was badly damaged by arson. Its reconstruction makes the present building a symbol of continuity and survival.
If guided tours are available, consider visiting the crypt beneath the church. Between 1654 and 1898, around 900 people were buried here, including governors of New France and many bishops of Quebec, among them François de Laval, the city’s first bishop. The unresolved mystery of Samuel de Champlain’s burial place adds another layer of intrigue, as his exact grave has never been confirmed.
Before leaving, find the Holy Door. It is not the main visitor entrance, but a bronze door set into the left-hand, or north, side of the façade when facing the cathedral from the square. Look for the richly decorated door with biblical reliefs and Christian symbols. Installed in 2014 for the cathedral’s 350th anniversary, it is the only Holy Door in North America and one of only a handful outside Rome.
Entry is free for self-guided visits, while crypt access usually requires a paid guided tour. Visit during the day to appreciate the interior details, or return in the evening for the laser light show, when available; tickets are best bought online in advance.
