Odessa National Scientific Library, Odessa

The Odessa National Scientific Library stands among the city’s most distinguished cultural institutions, tracing its origins to 1829 as only the second public library in the Russian Empire. Over nearly two centuries, it has evolved from a scholarly resource into a broad cultural hub, while maintaining its role as one of the oldest and most important research libraries in Ukraine. After carrying several names throughout its history, including a period when it was dedicated to Maxim Gorky, it was officially renamed the Odessa National Scientific Library in 2015.

Its building on Pastera Street is a notable architectural monument designed by Fyodor Nesturkh. The structure blends Neo-Greek forms with elements of Empire and early Modern style, giving it a distinctive elegance.
