Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

Inverlochy Castle, situated on the southern bank of the River Lochy in Scotland, is a 13th-century fortress steeped in historical significance. Constructed around 1270-1280 by John "the Black" Comyn, it witnessed turbulent times, serving as the backdrop for two decisive battles. After Robert the Bruce's ascension to the Scottish throne in 1306, the castle faced destruction, only to be resurrected under different rulers over the centuries.

Under Clan Cameron's control until 1501, the castle eventually fell into the hands of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly, in 1505. Subsequently repurposed as a Royal garrison by King James IV, it underwent further alterations, serving as a strategic point during conflicts such as the campaign of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, in 1645.

Despite the passage of time, Inverlochy Castle stands as a testament to its medieval origins, boasting a well-preserved layout characterized by a quadrangular courtyard and substantial curtain walls with round towers at each corner. Noteworthy features include the imposing Comyn Tower, serving as the castle's keep, and well-defended entrances equipped with portcullises.

Today, under the care of Historic Environment Scotland, Inverlochy Castle stands as a ruin, a scheduled monument echoing centuries of Scottish history and resilience.
