Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, Burlington
The Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue stands as a quiet yet enduring marker of Burlington’s early Jewish history. Built in 1885 at the corner of Archibald and Hyde Streets, it was the first permanent home of Ohavi Zedek—“Lovers of Justice”—Vermont’s oldest Jewish congregation, founded in 1876 by immigrants from Eastern Europe, many of them of Lithuanian origin.
Today, the building continues its religious role under Congregation Ahavath Gerim, preserving a sense of continuity that stretches back well over a century. Its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 reflects both its architectural character and its cultural significance within the city.
Architecturally, the synagogue presents a modest yet distinctive interpretation of the Gothic Revival style. Its brick exterior, added during a 1902 expansion, frames a façade defined by arched windows and a central arched entrance, reached by side-facing steps.
