Old Wan Chai Post Office, Hong Kong
Situated at the intersection of Wan Chai Gap Road and Queen's Road East, The Old Post Office holds the distinction of being Hong Kong's oldest surviving post office building. Its construction took place from 1912 to 1913, and it officially opened its doors on 1st March 1915 under the name Wan Chai Post Office. Due to its remarkable age and uncertain original purpose, the building has been recognized as a national monument.
Having faithfully served the Wan Chai community for a continuous period of 77 years, the post office ceased its operations in 1992. The architecture of the Old Wan Chai Post Office follows an L-shaped design, featuring a modest pitched roof with appealing gable ends and decorative moldings. Presently, the building has been repurposed as an Environmental Resource Center, managed by the Environmental Protection Department.
Within the Resource Centre, visitors can explore various amenities such as a touch-screen environmental information system, a reference library, and informative display boards. Additionally, an Environmental Garden forms part of the complex, where the walls consist of recycled bricks salvaged during the refurbishment of this historic structure.
