Ontario Place, Toronto

Ontario Place stretches across a series of artificial islands along the Lake Ontario shoreline, just southwest of downtown Toronto. Opened in 1971 as a provincial showcase and family theme park, it once combined exhibitions, rides, entertainment, and waterfront recreation. The original attraction closed in 2012, after which parts of the site were gradually reopened as parkland and event spaces.

As you approach the waterfront, one of the easiest landmarks to identify is the Cinesphere. Look toward the lake for the large white, dome-like structure rising above the water. Opened with Ontario Place in 1971, it became the world's first permanent IMAX theatre. Its unusual spherical design remains one of the most recognizable features of the original complex.

Nearby, check out the much larger Budweiser Stage, an open-air amphitheatre distinguished by its broad roof covering the main seating area. This is Ontario Place's principal concert venue, and it hosts major outdoor performances during the warmer months.

For a quieter part of the site, head east toward Trillium Park, opened in 2017 on the East Island. Follow the paths through landscaped lawns, trees, rocky shoreline features, and lookout areas overlooking Lake Ontario and Toronto's skyline. Running through the park is the William G. Davis Trail, a paved waterfront route designed for walking, jogging, and cycling. As you follow it, pause at the lake-facing viewpoints for some of the best views across the water.

Closer to the islands, you can also spot the marina, recognizable by its docks and moored boats. Its harbour is unusually protected by three old lake freighters that were deliberately sunk to form part of the breakwater. Together, the marina, trails, parkland, Cinesphere, and concert venue reveal how Ontario Place has evolved from a traditional theme park into a waterfront recreation and entertainment district.
