Parque Gabriel García Moreno, Quito

Parque Gabriel García Moreno is a compact green space in the historic district, positioned beside the Basílica del Voto Nacional. Its paths, lawns, mature trees and stone benches offer a quiet place to pause while exploring the surrounding slopes. The park also provides a clear view of the basilica’s tall neo-Gothic façade, pointed arches and stone towers.

The park is dedicated to Gabriel García Moreno, the nineteenth-century president whose government promoted the consecration of Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1873. This event later inspired the construction of the neighbouring basilica. A full-length bronze statue of García Moreno stands within the park, linking the public space to the political and religious history of the country.

Visitors commonly use the park as a resting point and a place to photograph the basilica from a wider angle. Green areas and simple seating contrast with the large stone church and the colourful historic buildings nearby. The sloping surroundings also open views across rooftops and distant hills. Daylight is best for studying architectural details, while evening illumination gives the basilica and surrounding façades a different appearance.
