Pauline Church, Pecs
The Pauline Church in Pecs, built in 1937, stands as one of Hungary's architectural masterpieces. Designed by Karoly Weichinger, the church is notable not only for its historical and religious significance but also for its artistic elements. Visitors are immediately greeted by the striking Zsolnay ceramics statue of the Virgin Mary in front of the church, as well as the vibrant sculpture by renowned artist Victor Vasarely, which faces the building.
The church's altar, crafted from bronze, presents a scene of Prince Saint Emeric kneeling before the Virgin Mary, reinforcing the church's dedication to Saint Emeric, the patron saint of youth. This dedication was at the request of university students in Pecs, reflecting the close connection between the church and the academic community.
The Pauline Order, established in 1252, traces its origins to hermits from the 13th century, who were brought together by Bishop Bartholomew to form a monastery. After the Paulines returned to Pecs in 1934, they sought to establish a new monastery to educate novices. This novitiate, constructed on the slopes of Mecsek Mountain, opened on October 25, 1934, in honor of Saint Maurus, co-patron of the diocese. Novices completing their studies there continued their theological education at the diocesan seminary.
The church's construction was part of a larger urban redevelopment project initiated in 1928 when the city of Pecs invited proposals to redesign its center. With the support of Bishop Ferenc Virag and the Pauline prior general, funds were secured, and construction commenced on Hunyadi Street. The consecration of the church by Archbishop Gyula Zichy of Kalocsa, held on Pentecost, drew thousands of attendees, underlining its importance to the local community.
Today, the Pauline Church stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and artistic beauty, drawing worshippers and visitors alike.
