Penang Hill Railway, Upper Station, George Town

The Penang Hill Railway, a dual-section funicular railway connecting Air Itam near George Town to Penang Hill, has been an vital transportation feature since its inauguration in 1923. Constructed over nearly two decades at a cost of 1.5 million Straits dollars, the railway underwent significant upgrades in the late 1970s and has recently =undergone another major renovation completed in 2024.

The recent upgrade project aimed to substantially enhance the visitor experience on Penang Hill by increasing the station's capacity from accommodating 250 visitors to an expansive 700 visitors at a time. Among the enhancements are improved facilities such as a modern ticketing counter, escalators, a lift, restrooms, a dedicated mothers' room, and a distinctive featured wall honoring Arnold Robert Johnson (1879–1966), the engineer behind the historic railway.

Furthermore, the station provides a state-of-the-art queue management system to ensure a seamless journey. Through an electronic boarding system, visitors are assigned batch numbers and provided with estimated boarding times for the funicular train, optimizing the overall efficiency.

While awaiting their turn, visitors can enjoy the amenities at nearby establishments like David Brown's Restaurant and Tea Terrace or the Cliff Cafe ("Astaka Bukit Bendera"), a three-storey food and beverage centre.
