British traveller Isabella Bird was struck by George Town’s “blaze of color” even before she reached the shore. She was among the fortunate visitors who witnessed the city’s multicultural character first-hand.

George Town occupies the northeastern cape of Penang Island, an area that historically belonged to the Sultanate of Kedah. Before British rule, the locality was known as Tanjung Penaga, or “Cape Penaga,” after a coastal tree that grew there.

The present name dates from 1786, when Captain Francis Light established a settlement for the British East India Company following negotiations with the Sultan of Kedah. Light named it George Town in honour of King George III. He also constructed the first Fort Cornwallis, originally a simple stockade made from palm trunks, to defend the new colonial foothold.

Light envisioned George Town as an entrepôt and free port, where traders could conduct business without paying customs duties. The policy was intended to attract commerce away from Dutch-controlled ports elsewhere in the region, and it proved successful. By 1802, the number of ships calling at the port had reportedly increased more than twentyfold. Merchants, labourers and settlers arrived from China, India, Arabia, Europe and other parts of the Malay Archipelago, gradually transforming the town into a diverse commercial centre.

In 1826, Penang joined Singapore and Malacca to form the Straits Settlements, with George Town initially serving as their capital. Although Singapore replaced it as the capital in 1832, George Town remained an important trading port. Its prosperity grew through regional commerce and the export of tin and rubber.

George Town’s multicultural population also shaped its architecture, food, religious life and commercial traditions. Chinese clan houses, mosques, Hindu temples, churches, Peranakan mansions and colonial civic buildings can all be found within its compact historic centre.

As you walk through George Town’s old centre, you will pass rows of shuttered shophouses, colourful temples and food stalls filled with the aromas of local spices. Near the waterfront, Fort Cornwallis recalls the city’s British beginnings, while nearby City Hall displays its imposing white colonial façade. Farther inland, Armenian Street combines heritage houses with playful murals and galleries. Along the way, trishaws, clan buildings, mosques and cafés reveal how Malay, Chinese, Indian and European traditions continue to share the same streets.

George Town received city status on 1 January 1957. In 2008, its historic centre was jointly inscribed with Melaka on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising a city formed by centuries of migration, trade and cultural exchange. As you follow this walking route, Isabella Bird’s “blaze of color” will cease to be merely a traveller’s impression—it will unfold around you in every mural, market, mansion and place of worship.
