Persephone Theatre, Saskatoon

Persephone Theatre, Saskatoon

Persephone Theatre is a cornerstone of Saskatoon’s cultural landscape, bringing professional live theatre to the city and province for over 50 years. Founded in 1974 by director Brian Richmond and actors Janet and Susan Wright, the company was named after the Greek goddess Persephone-a symbol of growth, transformation, and seasonal renewal-an apt metaphor for its evolving creative mission on the Saskatchewan prairies.

Initially staging performances in venues like the Mendel Art Gallery and the University of Saskatchewan’s Greystone Theatre, Persephone eventually found a permanent home under the visionary leadership of Artistic Director Tibor Feheregyhazi, who helmed the company from 1982 until he died in 2007. His leadership culminated in the construction of the purpose-built Remai Arts Centre at River Landing-a striking facility that opened the same year he passed away.

Today, the Remai Arts Centre stands as an architectural and artistic landmark in Saskatoon’s “Cultural Block.” The venue includes the 421-seat Rawlco Radio Hall, the more intimate 150-seat Backstage Stage, rehearsal halls, classrooms, and fully equipped workshops. These spaces not only host Persephone’s rich programming-including classic plays, Canadian works, and youth-focused productions-but also serve the broader community through rentals and public events.

The theatre runs a full season of Mainstage productions, a youth series, community outreach, and an active touring program. Its educational branch, the Persephone School of Theatre, offers workshops for children, teens, adults, and professionals, supporting the growth of local talent.

Today, the Persephone Theatre continues to honor its legacy while embracing new voices and ideas. A hub of artistic excellence and community engagement, it remains a vital force in Saskatchewan’s performing arts scene.
