Plaza de Toros de Salamanca (Salamanca Bullring), Salamanca

The Salamanca Bullring was built through the joint efforts of 213 local merchants and industrialists, a collective of unnamed citizens whose contributions led to its nickname, the “Plaza of Two Hundred Families.” Though primarily serving as a bullfighting venue, the Bullring has welcomed a wide array of other events. In its history, the space has hosted a rodeo by U.S. military personnel, a stage finish for the Tour of Spain cycling race in 2011, and various concerts.

Architecturally classified as eclectic, the bullring features a harmonious blend of materials: sturdy red brick combined with Villamayor stone accents, and an elegant wrought-iron upper gallery. The main entrance is crowned by a triumphant arch extending across two floors, while inside, decorative details nod subtly to neo-Mudéjar and Arabesque influences.

Originally designed to hold approximately 10,858 spectators-with an arena diameter of 54 m-the stadium has since undergone renovations that slightly increased its capacity to around 11,800. Remarkably, planners also prioritized safety: evacuation procedures were calculated so that the entire arena could be cleared in just four minutes in case of emergencies.

The bullring continues to play a central role in Salamanca’s cultural calendar. Bullfights remain central during local festivals-especially the Festival of the Virgin of la Vega, Saint Matthew’s Day, and Saint John of Sahagún celebrations.
