Porta Gemina (Twin Gates), Pula

Twin Gates of Pula were one of ten entrances through Pula’s defensive walls. The double-arched gateway survives together with a section of wall extending toward Garden Square. At some point during the Middle Ages, the gates were buried beneath the ground. They were rediscovered centuries later and are believed to date from the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD. They probably replaced an earlier entrance into the Roman city.

A commemorative plaque bearing the name Lucius Menacius Priscus was discovered nearby. The inscription records that he helped finance part of the city’s water-supply system. Although the plaque was not originally connected with the gates, it was later placed above the arches.

The two openings are framed by three half-columns with Composite capitals. A carved stone wreath above them enhances the overall composition. The grooves used for lowering the portcullises are still visible. Part of an octagonal mausoleum dating from the 3rd century AD was also discovered near the gates. Today, the Twin Gates provide access toward the Archaeological Museum of Istria, Pula Castle, and the Small Roman Theater.
