Prague City Gallery at the Municipal Library, Prague
Not all of Prague's architectural wonders are steeped in ancient history; some modern gems are equally worthy of exploration, such as the Municipal Library situated on Marianské Square, which also houses a section of the Prague City Gallery. While lacking a permanent exhibition of its own, the library regularly hosts temporary displays showcasing contemporary art.
Constructed between 1925 and 1928 by architect František Roith, this building serves not only as a library but also as a hub for adult education, concerts, and exhibitions. Visitors, both locals and tourists, have access to an array of resources including books, DVDs, CDs, and internet connectivity via library computers or Wi-Fi. The eastern wing, adorned in lavish Art Deco style, doubles as the official residence of the Mayor of Prague.
Adorning the main entrance are striking statues crafted by Cubist sculptor Ladislav Kofránek, while the ceiling of the expansive central hall features an intricate geometric ornamentation designed by František Kysela, a celebrated Czech painter and graphic designer.
Following extensive restoration efforts in 1994, a portion of the Prague City Gallery found its home on the library's second floor. In 1996, a new entrance to the gallery was added by Valdo Munic, enhancing accessibility and inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of contemporary art.
