Puente de la Constitucion de 1812 (Bridge of the 1812 Constitution), Cadiz
The Constitution of 1812 Bridge is an admirable modern landmark that spans the bay of the city, linking the island to the mainland at Puerto Real. Completed in 2015 after nearly three decades of planning and construction, the bridge stretches over three kilometers and is both the longest and highest in Spain.
Its dramatic cable-stayed design, created by architect Javier Manterola, features 180 pylons and a sweeping curve that mirrors the rhythm of the sea, making it an aesthetic highlight for the local skyline.
More than a feat of engineering, the bridge is a symbolic tribute to Spanish constitutional history, taking its name from the 1812 Constitution, famously nicknamed “La Pepa.”

Add in centuries of Moorish, Baroque, and Neoclassical influence, and you’ve got a city that wears its history in layers... view more

Others-less into mythology, more into maritime records-say it was the Phoenicians who rolled up in black ships around 1100 BC and named it Gadir, meaning “walled stronghold.” Either way, it’s been... view more
