Quartier Saint-Louis (Saint Louis District), Versailles

Saint-Louis District is one of the most evocative and historically rich areas of Versailles. It actually comprises two intertwined parts: Old Versailles, the medieval heart of the town that Louis XIII acquired, and the strictly urbanized Saint‑Louis district, which occupies what used to be Louis XIII’s Deer park. The neighbourhood began taking shape in the late 17th century and saw its major development during the 18th century under Louis XIV and Louis XV.

Saint‑Louis is a fine example of classic French urban planning from the Old Regime. The streets are laid out in an orderly checkerboard pattern, especially around the old markets. Though many of the original market structures have vanished or changed, some vestiges like the Carrés Saint-Louis remain, now hosting charming shops and artisans. Key landmarks include the Cathedral of Saint-Louis, built between 1743 and 1754. There’s also the King’s Kitchen Garden, created to feed the court and staff of the palace.

As you wander through the district, you’ll notice its living heritage: well-preserved façades, peaceful narrow lanes, cafés, and local markets. Events from French history also echo here - for example, the Tennis Court Hall where members of the Estates-General gathered there, declaring that they would not disband until France had a new constitution.
