Ras el-Ma (Head of the Water), Chefchaouen

Ras el-Ma, whose name translates roughly as “Source of the Water,” is a refreshing natural landmark on the northeastern edge of Chefchaouen’s medina. Fed by springs flowing from the Rif Mountains, the water cascades over rocks and through stone channels before continuing into the town. The sound of running water and the cooler air make this a pleasant place to pause after exploring the medina’s narrow, winding streets.

Water has played an important role in Chefchaouen’s history since the town was founded in 1471. Its location near reliable mountain springs provided an essential resource for the early settlement and helped sustain the local population. Today, the area is a familiar gathering place for local residents. Communal washing basins can still be seen here, where women wash clothes and textiles while chatting with neighbours. Small cascades and shaded spots also attract visitors looking for a break from the heat. Although Ras el-Ma is not a dramatic mountain waterfall, its easy access from the old town makes it a worthwhile stop.

When visiting, take time to enjoy the sound of the flowing water and observe the daily activities around the spring. Remember that this is a working communal space, so be respectful when taking photographs of local residents. Also, watch your step on wet stones, which can be slippery.
