Religious Beach, Tel Aviv

Religious Beach, Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv has a large number of communities that stick to the letter of scripture, be it the Torah, the Bible or the Koran. Nordau Beach, situated close the Hilton “dog” beach is a unique place in this respect, the only one of its kind in Tel Aviv, catering for the religious folk who want to take a dip in modest clothing or to tan and relax away from the crowds or members of the opposite sex.

In order to maintain modesty, Nordau is secluded from other beaches by a high wall and is designated for men or women on certain days, ensuring the two genders don't mingle. The beach is open to women on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and to men on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Several hours before the beginning of Shabbat, it empties out and then mixed swimming is allowed.

Oftentimes, non-religious females come here on designated women’s days in order to swim without men nearby. The beach is always open, however, if you plan to visit and feel more comfortable swimming with a lifeguard on duty, the hours are as follows:
Summer Months (May through October) 7 days a week from 7:45 am to sundown
Winter Months (October through April) 7 days a week from 7:45 am to 1:45 pm.

Just as any other major beach in Tel Aviv, Nordau has sports facilities and playgrounds. No barbecues, bonfires, parties, dogs or water sports are allowed though.

A Walk in The Old City of Jaffa

One of the oldest port cities on the Mediterranean coast, the first record of which dates back to the 15th century BC, Jaffa is a part of Tel Aviv, although quite different in terms of vibe. Famous for its ancient slate houses and narrow winding stone roads, it feels a bit similar to the ancient towns of Asia, but far less noisy and not too crowded.

Also, devoid of the strong religious...  view more
