Rontgen Gedachtnisstatte (Roentgen Memorial), Wurzburg
The Roentgen Memorial in Würzburg pays tribute to Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845–1923), the German physicist who discovered X-rays and was honored with the first Nobel Prize in Physics. The memorial showcases historical instruments, apparatus, and original documents related to Roentgen's work. It is situated in the corridors and two laboratory rooms on the ground floor of the former Physics Institute of the University of Würzburg at Roentgenring 8, now occupied by the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. In 1909, the street "Pleicherring," where the building is located, was renamed "Roentgenring" in his honor.
The Rontgen Memorial offers a glimpse into late 19th-century experimental physics, featuring the original apparatus used in the discovery, a cathode ray experiment setup foundational to Roentgen's work, an X-ray fluoroscopy experiment, and a recreation of Roentgen's historical laboratory. An additional exhibition room displays various X-ray tubes, a medical X-ray machine from Siemens & Halske from 1912, and several original documents.
A film at the entrance provides an overview of the memorial and Roentgen's contributions. In the corridor, personal items of Roentgen are displayed, highlighting his life and the historical context of his discovery. The exhibition was updated in 2015 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of his groundbreaking discovery.
