Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Birmingham

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) is a venerable art institution based in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham. Established initially as the Birmingham Society of Artists in 1821, its roots extend back to a life drawing academy founded in 1809 by Samuel Lines and associates. The organization evolved from the Birmingham Academy of Arts, inaugurated in 1814 with its first exhibition. In 1868, after receiving a royal charter, it adopted its current name.

Historically, the RBSA played a significant role in the Victorian art scene, influencing the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements. Renowned artists such as Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, and John Everett Millais served as its presidents, enhancing its stature in the arts community.

The society's commitment to education, initiated by its founders, led to the creation of the Birmingham School of Art in 1843, though it later became a separate entity under municipal management. The early 20th century brought financial challenges, resulting in the relocation of the society to a renovated warehouse near Saint Paul's Square in 2000, where the RBSA Gallery was officially opened by Charles, Prince of Wales.

The gallery, marking its bicentenary in 2014 with the exhibition "A Place For Art," continues to be a focal point for contemporary art and houses a permanent collection of over 600 works, including pieces by notable past members like David Cox.

Today, the RBSA thrives as an independent society, promoting local artists through exhibitions, educational programs, and workshops. Artists may join the society as Associates or Members through a voting process, contributing to the rich artistic legacy of the Birmingham area.
