Royal Malaysian Customs Museum, Melaka
The Royal Malaysian Customs Department Museum is a dedicated museum in Malacca City. It focuses on the history and functions of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. The building that houses the museum was originally constructed in the early 1890s under British rule. It served as a warehouse for imported trade goods and goods for export. It served as the Malacca State Customs Department office from the 1950s until 2003. After Wisma Kastam's completion, it became a museum, officially opening on August 25, 2006.
Located on the banks of the Malacca River, the museum is a prominent landmark in the tourist-rich area of Banda Hilir. The building itself retains the appearance of a large warehouse, reflecting its historical use. Visitors can explore the customs history of Malacca, an important Malaysian port city, and view a variety of artifacts and exhibits. These include antique customs equipment from the 1950s to the 1970s, such as typewriters, compasses, binoculars, and classic bicycles. The museum also showcases uniforms, both historical and modern, along with photographs documenting the Department's history.
The museum also displays seized items like protected wildlife products, illegal firearms, sharp weapons, obscene sculptures, and motorcycles without approval permits. One of the unique attractions opposite the museum is the renovated Portuguese ancient merchant ship, Ocean Flower, which adds to the historical ambiance of the area.
Admission to the Royal Malaysian Customs Museum is free, making it an accessible educational destination for both local and international visitors. It is particularly recommended for those already visiting the nearby Maritime Museum, as it offers a complementary historical narrative. Despite its modest appearance, the museum provides a surprisingly rich and informative experience.
