Rue Maguelone Reformed Church, Montpellier

The Rue Maguelone Reformed Church, located in Montpellier, is a prominent Protestant landmark known for its beautiful Neo-Roman architectural style. Construction began in 1867 and was completed in 1870 under the direction of Corvetto, a celebrated architect of the time. This church was built to accommodate a growing Protestant community and stands as a testament to the city’s religious and cultural evolution.

The current church is situated facing Planchon Square and boasts a cross-shaped design, with an interior noted for its excellent acoustics-an essential feature for Protestant liturgy, which places a strong emphasis on the spoken word. The church’s austere decor further complements its function as a place of worship and reflection.

Historically, the Protestant presence in Montpellier dates back to the late 16th century when the first Protestant church was constructed on what is now Place Chabanneau. It was once considered one of the most beautiful Protestant churches of its era but was unfortunately demolished in 1682 after the city reverted to Catholic control. The Rue Maguelone Church, inaugurated in 1870, is a symbolic continuation of that legacy.

Although the church is not open year-round, it remains a significant cultural and spiritual hub during the summer months and for special events. Its welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the dynamic sermons delivered by its pastor, makes it a beloved gathering place for families and visitors of all ages.
