Russian Submarine Museum, Providence

The Russian Submarine Museum was a floating Cold War attraction centred on the former Soviet submarine K-77, also presented as Juliett 484. Built in the 1960s, the diesel-electric vessel measured about 86 metres and was designed to carry four cruise missiles, together with bow and stern torpedo tubes. Its dark double hull, tall sail and raised missile housings gave visitors a close view of Soviet naval engineering.

Tours led through narrow passageways, crew bunks, machinery spaces and control compartments created for approximately 78 sailors. The confined layout revealed the practical conditions of long patrols, while gauges, pipes and operating stations showed how the submarine navigated, communicated and managed its weapons. Before opening as a museum in 2002, the vessel was used during the production of the film K-19: The Widowmaker.

The museum is no longer open. A severe storm caused the submarine to sink at its berth in April 2007, ending public tours. Military divers raised it in 2008, but corrosion and high repair costs prevented restoration, and the vessel was later dismantled for scrap. Visitors to the former location will therefore not find an accessible submarine or museum displays; its years as a floating classroom are documented mainly through photographs and historical records.
