Wickenden Street, Providence

This walkable Fox Point corridor is lined with cafés, restaurants, shops, galleries, and apartments. Painted façades and compact storefronts reflect the area’s long development as a neighborhood shaped by maritime trade, immigration, and small-scale commerce. The Coffee Exchange, established in the 1980s, became a popular meeting place and an early regional supporter of sustainably sourced coffee.

The route is named after William Wickenden, a 17th-century preacher known for unauthorized baptisms. During the 19th century, Fox Point welcomed Irish immigrants, including families who settled in an area once called Cork Hill. Cape Verdean sailors arrived on packet and whaling ships, forming an early community of voluntary African immigrants. Portuguese and Azorean influences remain visible in local food traditions, churches, and brightly painted buildings.

The area also has an industrial past. Founded in 1844, the Providence Tool Company supplied Union forces during the Civil War. Nearby India Point Park hosts Cape Verdean and seafood festivals. Nearby attractions include the Barker Playhouse, home to a community theatre group founded in 1909, and Al Forno, widely associated with the development of grilled pizza cooked directly over charcoal.
